THE PITUITARY OR MASTER GLAND

The Pituitary gland is a small endocrine gland located in the middle of the skull and with extensive connection to the brain. It is called the master gland because it controls the function of various other endocrine glands including the Thyroid gland, the Adrenal gland, and the male and female sex glands.

The Pituitary gland also secretes the hormone Prolactin, which is responsible for preparing the mother for Lactation or Breast Feeding following pregnancy and Growth Hormone. Disorders of the Pituitary gland include conditions in which there is over or under secretion of the various hormones controlled by the gland. Abnormal and excessive production of Prolactin causes Galactorrhea or milk letdown in a non-pregnant woman. A tumor of the Pituitary gland may also produce neurological symptoms of headache and visual disturbances.

Your Endocrinologist is best suited to help you deal with problems of the Pituitary gland.
