HYPERTENSION

Hypertension can be classified as essential or secondary and is a risk factor for Heart disease, Stroke and Kidney damage especially in Diabetic patients.

Essential Hypertension usually develops in older patients and usually runs in families. There is no known specific cause for this and it is usually controlled by a combination of lifestyle changes and medications. This is the garden-variety kind and is the case in about 90% of people with Hypertension.

Secondary Hypertension is less common, occurring in about 10% of people with Hypertension. It usually develops at an earlier age and is usually more severe and difficult to treat. It is usually a result of specific abnormal hormonal secretion and can be cured when that is corrected. Patients who develop severe Hypertension at an early age should be evaluated for Secondary.
