THE ADRENAL GLANDS

The adrenal glands are two ovoid glands seated on top of each kidney and are made of two parts: the adrenal Cortex and Medulla.

The adrenal cortex secretes the Stress hormones or Corticosteroid, the Mineral corticoid Hormones and Male and Female sex hormones.

The adrenal medulla secretes a group of hormones know as the Catecholamine and include adrenaline, nor adrenaline and dopamine.

Disorders of the adrenal glands may involve over or under production of one or more of these hormones resulting in various clinical disease conditions including Cushing's disease, secondary Hypertension, Adrenal Insufficiency, excessive Hair growth, various salt and water imbalance states and in certain situations abnormal sex organ development. The adrenal glands may also harbor benign or malignant tumors that need to be surgically removed.
